This morning we, together with the support of a wide array of technology companies, have announced Helix™, the industry's first comprehensive, truly open platform for media delivery. I believe today's announcements will transform the digital media delivery industry and open up huge new growth opportunities for you and for the entire industry. While words like "breakthrough" and "revolution" are often overused, I truly believe that those words apply today and here's why: Never before has the industry come together to create the proper structure and process that ensures maximum innovation and flexibility for Internet media delivery. Today's announcement achieves this through the Helix Initiative, which consists of 3 fundamental elements:


The creation of the Helix Platform combines extensive, proven digital software technology with a rich set of application interfaces. RealNetworks is contributing years of R&D and millions of lines of code to create the core basis of this platform, called Helix DNA™. This in turn empowers independent developers as well as information technology and consumer electronics companies to integrate Internet-delivered media into a multitude of applications, in a vast array of environments, more easily and more extensively than has ever been possible.

The establishment of the Helix Community enables companies, institutions, and individual developers to access and license the Helix application interfaces and Helix DNA platform source code in order to build Helix-powered encoder, server and client products and other media applications for both commercial and non-commercial use.

The launch of the Helix Universal Server from RealNetworks radically improves the cost of digital media delivery by supporting every major digital media format while also breaking new ground in delivery performance. Also part of the product suite and shipping today, the Helix Producer from RealNetworks is a fully revamped, GUI-based, production tool used to convert live and prerecorded audio and video to RealAudio 8 and RealVideo 9 formats.

Any one of these elements would by itself be profound. Together, they will transform the media delivery landscape and open up huge new opportunities by providing unmatched shared development resources for revenue enhancements and to support universal products for cost efficiencies and flexibility.
As a RealNetworks customer, you benefit greatly from the Helix initiative. Helix is fully compatible with all of the existing RealNetworks products and 3rd party products based on the RealSystem. What's more, all of your existing RealAudio™ and RealVideo™ content already works with the Helix Universal Server.

美国当地时间7月22日，美国RealNetworks发表了用于制作和发送数字媒体产品的平台“Helix Platform”和社区“Helix Community”。

　　Helix Platform中嵌入了数字媒体软件技术和1000多个API。其核心“Helix DNA”引擎包括了数百万行的源代码。

　　通过Helix Community，开发人员与技术企业可以访问Helix Platform的源代码、强化Helix Platform、开发支持Helix的编码器、服务器软件以及客户端产品。除可实时播放及点播流媒体、播放本地或远程的数字媒体之外，还可以增加新的媒体格式和数据类型。

　　Helix Community中备有“RealNetworks Community Source License（RCSL）”和“RealNetworks Public Source License（RPSL）”两种授权体系。

　　Helix DNARCSL的所有源代码都通过RCSL提供，其中包括1000多个Helix API Implementation、支持Helix的编码器、服务器、面向客户的源代码。在RCSL基础上开发的产品，支持Helix接口。同时在RCSL的基础上开发的产品将以开放源代码公开。RPSL方面，最早可以使用的Helix DNA组件是“Helix DNA Client”，90天之内在Helix Community发布。

　　据RealNetworks称，美国BSquare、美国CollabNet、美国思科系统、日立制作所、美国惠普、美国英特尔、美国Lindows、美国nCUBE、NEC、米Network Appliance、芬兰诺基亚、美国Openwave、挪威Opera SoftWare、美国甲骨文、美国Palm旗下的PalmSource、美国Phoenix Technologies、美国Pinnacle Systems、美国红帽、索尼、美国Speedera、美国Sprint、ST Microsystems、美国Sun Microsystems、英国Symbian、英国Tao Group、美国T德州仪器、美国TiVO、美国Volera、Xiph.org Foundation等29家公司声明支持Helix。

　　“数字媒体业界目前面临的主要问题包括：为支持多种格式和架构所花费的成本与精力、以及开发缺少共享应用接口的应用中所消耗的费用。另外，随着数字媒体的对象不再局限于个人电脑，还扩大到移动设备与家用设备，通过因特网的媒体发送越来越复杂。RealNetworks将通过Helix Platform与Helix Community，一一解决这些问题”（RealNetworks）。

　　另外，RealNetworks还于当天发表了以Helix Platform为基础的数字媒体发送服务器“Helix Universal Server”，该服务器支持“RealAudio”、“RealVideo”、“QuickTime”、“MPEG-2”、“MPEG-4”、“Windows Media”格式的媒体，“可同时进行1万件流媒体点播”（RealNetworks）。目前该产品已经开始供货，可在Linux、UNIX、Windows等主要操作系统上运行。
