Authorware

Authorware

Warren "The Howdy Man's" Guide to Direct-L
Warren "The Howdy Man" Ockrassa has graciously written these explanations for why you may not get a response to a question posted on Direct-L as well as some general guidelines to remember writng to the list.

    1. This group is read by professional individuals, not all of whom may have time to respond to your postings right away. Many receive posts in digest mode, in fact, which means they see the posts just once a day, in bulk. Hence responses may not be immediately forthcoming.
    2. Your subject line may not have been explicit enough. A subject line such as "HELP" is not useful in getting you help; a subject line such as "getNetText doesn't seem to work for me" is better.
    3. You may have posted using HTML format rather than plain-text ASCII. HTML content is unreadable on some email platforms, and is frowned upon in listserv postings (a lot of bandwidth is wasted on needless text formatting). Many digest search engines cannot handle HTML either. So send plain-text content, not HTML.
    4. You may not have posted an explicit enough description of your problem. It helps us all to have a better idea of what you are dealing with rather than a vague set of questions about some Director functions.
    5. Your post may have contained too many questions. Sometimes it's possible to overwhelm the humans who receive your posts by asking too much at once.
    6. Your post may not have contained enough "white space". A thirty-line block of text is far less readable than a forty-line block containing the same content with strategic paragraph breaks.
    7. What you describe may simply have not yet been seen by anyone else. It's helpful when you post a question to describe the steps needed to reproduce the error event you encounter.
    8. You may not have adequately described your development or targeted release environment. What version of Director? What OS? What is your target release platform? What is your distribution media? Include any details which may seem to apply.
    9. You may be asking a question which was answered just a little while back in this forum. Consider searching the post archives before you actually post your question to make sure you are not asking about something answered here six weeks ago.
    10. Here are some general things to remember when posting to this group:
Don't post offtopic things. If you absolutely must, prepend your subject line with "OT".
    Don't post HTML content.
Don't post a "thank-you" note meant for one individual. Never post a "thank-you" note that contains more quoted lines than your own response. That is, don't quote 30 lines of content to append a simple "thank you". Thanks are appreciated, but not in that form.
Never post attachments. Whether it's some kind of HTML signature content or a file, never, ever post binary content to this listserv. Post a reference to a Web page or offer to send files offlist to those who want them.
    Keep it brief.
Don't apologize for your command of English. It's not necessary to any intelligent reader of your notes. Your English is fine.
Never ever attack anyone on the basis of his English usage. Doing so labels you as a pathetic cretin.
Never post a "test" message to any listserv. Everyone gets it via email. No one can elect to ignore it. By posting such a thing you waste bandwidth and time for potentially thousands, and you may end up in the killfile lists of many.
This is not the place to send your "unsubscribe" notes. Instructions for unsubscribing to this listserv were included in the confirmation note you received when you first subscribed. It is hoped you still have that note. If not, it is your own fault; you will have to ask a friendly member of this forum (offlist and privately) how to unsubscribe rather than sending your blind notes to everyone.
Remember that you are welcome to ask questions here, but don't expect too many replies to your questions initially if you are a lurker -- a regular reader but not a poster -- and if you ask a very involved set of questions without much onlist "credibility", i.e., if you are someone who has no real onlist presence aside from the current question. If you lurk provide some indication you have read posts a while before you ask your question.
    Help others whenever you can.
Provide context to your reply. A simple "I agree" or "I wondered about that too" may not be enough for anyone to understand what you are referring to.
NEVER POST IN ALL CAPS. THIS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING AND IS SEEN AS BEING A BIT RUDE, TO SAY THE LEAST.
